There’s also a very famous female ghost in PD. Every chinese, from my parent’s generation till my generation knows this ghost. She is a cheapo ghost. She likes to disturb small babies below the age of one and she makes them cry every night, 7 pm sharp. When the crying starts, no amount of cajoling, no amount of mother’s nen nen and no amount of rocking will stop them. Some unsupersticious parents will blame it on stomach gas, some learned ones will say it’s natural, but the thing is, the baby is throwing up such a racket that the whole household is affected. MILs starts to blame the DILs. DILs starts to blame the husbands and all hell breaks loose.
They bring the baby to their favourite doctor. He press here, press there, asking stupid questions like , ‘What time do you feed the baby?" or "how many hours apart do you feed her?" and so on. Then he will prescribe some syrup concoctions and sent the parents home. But then, the baby is not sick. They have just been disturbed by the female ghost and no syrup will make her crying stop until tthe female ghost is pacified and leave the baby alone.
Now the MIL steps into the picture with her usual, "I told you so" theory. So reluctantly, the baby’s parent will follow MIL to the oldest temple in PD and ask for heavenly help. The temple medium is an old hand in these matters. He had seen and cured countless cases of these nature. He can let the gods enter and leave his body at will. After hearing their predictament, he would go into an immediate trance. MIL will meekly tell the God about the problem and the medium, i mean, God, will calculate his fingers and tell them that the famous female ghost is disturbing the baby. They are to buy a piece of pork, some flower bisuits, bowl of rice and some fruits to feed this ghost. They are to offer all these items with 2 lighted candles, and 3 joss sticks at any T junctions nearby, during sunset. And Voila! I say also you won’t believe, but the crying stops that night itself.
And oh.. i forgot to mention, the name of this famous ghost? They call her ‘Ger Lor Hu Leen". That’s hokkien. In English it means, " The Passing-By Madam"
